The Difference Between Certified Diamonds and Non-Certified Diamonds PDF Print E-mail

By Angela Dolson

Buying quality diamonds often requires that you do a bit of scrutiny and some inquiry about the stone's quality, and usually, the best quality diamonds in the market are certified diamonds. If you want really good-quality gemstones that you can be sure are of superior quality, you should not buy the first shiny ring or bracelet that captures your fancy without looking for either an EGL or GIA certification for the stones.

GIA or EGL Certified Diamonds

What exactly are GIA or EGL certified diamonds, and what makes these diamonds more sought after than those diamonds that do not have any certifications? Let us start with a little background and description of what GIA and EGL are. GIA is the acronym for the Gemological Institute of America.

EGL is also an acronym for another gem-analyzing authority, the European Gemological Laboratory. Both institutions specialize in analyzing, classifying, and certifying gemstones, with a special focus on diamonds, to give people who wish to purchase or invest in these lovely stones an idea as to the quality of the stones they are planning on purchasing.

The GIA or Gemological Institute of America and the EGL or European Gemological Laboratory both give certified diamonds ratings for the clarity of the stone, the color of the stone, the carat or weight of the stone, and the cut of the stone. These classifications for certified diamonds, also called the 4Cs, determine how valuable a diamond should be. The grading system that diamonds have to go through happens not only once but a few times and by a few experts in the field of diamond classification so as to ensure accurate classification and proper certification.

The four Cs of certified diamonds get scrutinized starting usually with the stone's clarity. The clarity of certified diamonds are determined depending usually on the size of the stone and how it has been cut. The evaluation of such a stone also includes determining if there were diamond treatments to help make the stone seem clearer or almost flawless like laser drilling or fracture filling.

The color is then determined in a controlled environment where background and light sources cannot affect the various independent evaluators' judgments. A general consensus usually gives these certified diamonds their color rating. Carat is the weight of the diamond and is obviously gained with a weighing of the cut stones.

The cut is then judged via how well the stone has been cut or how the facet angles give the stone its brilliance. This is only done for stones that are round and are often given a cut classification of somewhere between D and Z. These certified diamonds then get their registry numbers or have their branding numbers engraved on them upon request of the diamond's owner.

Why Purchase Certified Diamonds as Opposed to Uncertified Ones?

While diamonds are diamonds, the main reason why certified diamonds are oftentimes more expensive is that they are of the best possible quality you can find, and it has been proven. Buyers are often assured that these certified diamonds passed certain tough quality standards set by the two foremost authorities in the gem industry, the GIA and the EGL. These certified diamonds even come with their own certificates to prove their worth and their classification and quality. The reason why you should purchase certified diamonds over non-certified ones is perfectly simple: you should never settle for anything less than the real thing since there are diamonds that have been synthetically made and can be easily sold to you at the same price as these natural diamonds. A certificate coming from any of these two gem classification authorities can help assure you that the diamond you are purchasing, whether for yourself or for someone special in your life, is the real deal and is not a cheap imitation of a beautiful stone.
